Default get rid of the "Read Only" on stubborn document

How do I get rid of the "Read Only" on a stubborn document I received? I
save the document to a new file name, but, upon opening, it also is "read
only"! FYI, It has some embedded macros that I disable every time upon
opening.

G'Day jack,

In the 'Save As' dialog, check under ToolsSecurity options and ensure
that you UNCHECK the 'Read-only recommended' box.

Pat,

Hello down under! I'm in the States in Virginia.

I probably should have mentioned I'm using Word 97.

When I go to Save As, the dialog box does not have a Tools button -- just
the Options button, and when I click that I get only one tab titled SAVE.
The Save tab does have a box to check that says "Read only recommended", but
it is unchecked -- saving the document like that nonetheless does not get
rid of the read-only attribute.

Ok Jack (and Hello Up-Over)!

I'm going to guess that you've copied this from a CD, and that the SYSTEM
Read-Only attribute is set. (I assumed that you were getting a WORD dialog
about 'Read-only'.)

Using Windows Explorer, locate the file copy ON YOUR HARD DRIVE.

Right-Click, chose Properties ...
Near the bottom there are two check boxes 'Read-only' and 'Hidden
Make sure both are UNchecked.
OK

(On a CD all files are marked Read-Only by Windows. If you copy the file
to the HDD, this property persists.)

In Windows Explorer, right-click on the document and choose Properties.
Clear the "read only" check box.

Pat & Suzanne,

Yeah, I've already gone to Windows Explorer and to look at Properties --
both the Read and Hidden boxes are already unchecked -- that's what makes
this so frustrating!

So - Jack!

What indication (exactly) do you get that the file is Read-only (and
when do you get it)?

Pat,

I open the file, but before it opens, I get a warning that says, "The
document you are opening contains macros...." and click on Disable Macros.
The file opens and in the title bar it says (Read Only). So I make changes,
save it to a different file name (and make sure, in Options, that the
Read-only Recommended is not checked, and it is not). I close the file.
Next time I open the file (the one in which I made changes and saved under a
new file name) I get a warning that says, "The document you are opening
contains macros...." I click on Disable Macros. The file opens and in the
title bar it says (Read Only)! I check Windows Explore and find that it
does NOT have the Read Only attribute.

???

What happens if you enable the macros?
