I'm trying to help my students create a macro to set up MLA format. MLA
format requires a header with their last name and page number. I can get it
to set up the heading (name, subject, date, etc.) but not the header. It
worked in Word 2003 but not 2007.

Why not create this as a Quick Part?

Thanks for the suggestion. It almost works but doesn't work as well as a
macro. The macro will update with the current date and the correct page
number.

You can use DATE (or CREATEDATE) and PAGE fields in Quick Parts.
