Default columns in an existing word document?

I have a word document were columns were created using the tab key. I need
to change these into actual columns.

Select the text. Go to Table Convert Text To Table. Make sure the
"Separate text at" option is set to Tabs. Click OK.

If you don't want the border lines on the table, the quick way to
remove them is to press Ctrl+Alt+U.
