Default Word 2000 "File" drop down not working

This is very strange... I recently had problems with Adobe Acrobat 7.0
corrupting my MS Word 2000 application, so I uninstalled Office 2000 and
Adobe Acrobat 7. I re-installed Office 2000 (Adobe Acrobat 7 is NOT
installed now) and noticed that Word opens fine and everything in it appears
to be working, except for the "File" selection on the menu bar. Edit, View,
Format, Tools, etc. all work fine; just "File" on the menu bar doesn't do
anything when I click on it. Even if I click on one of the other selections
in the menu bar and run my mouse cursor down the menu bar over the top of
them, the drop downs pop-up for each one until I reach the end over "File" --
nothing drops down.
Has anyone heard of or seen this before?

TIA,
Al
