Default Set Navigation Pane Level

This applies to Word 2010.

When I open a document with the navigation pane showing, or when I turn on the navigation pane in an existing document, the pane shows all the titles for heading level 3 (and above). However, this is a large document and I have about 500 level 3 headings! So seeing 500 entries doesn't do me much good.

What I need to do is tell Word to display only level one or two, not level three. I can do it manually by right-clicking on a heading and selecting the heading level I want.

So my question is: is there some obscure corner of Word where I can set the default level which the navigation pane will use when first displaying the heading levels?

Thanks for ideas/suggestions/help.
