I don't know what has changed but I am no longer able to highlight a word in
Word, type over it and the previous word gets replaced. Neither can I
highlight a word, press backspace and the word disappears. Can anyone tell
me what I need to press or change so that I can do this again?

Tools | Options | Edit: "Typing replaces selection."
