Default "save as" lost data

Was working on transcribing letters (had 6 letters in saved, named file) . I
did a "save as" to rename the file to email one of the other letters. The
first file closed when I saved the second one and when I reopened the
original one all the letters were gone. I have my autosave on to save every
minute. Are these letters gone or can they be retored.
