Default How do I get Word to delete text using the backspace key?

THANK YOU!! This was driving me crazy too, as it just happened one day
without me having changed anything. I'm so glad I found this resource -
thanks for your help!

On the Edit tab of Tools | Options, check the box for "Typing replaces
selection." Backspacing is considered "typing."

I used to be able to select text tehn either hit teh backspace key or just
type new text and delete teh selected part, now Word won't do that and I'm
not sure how I got it that way. HGow do I reset it so that it will work

the
way it used to?
