Default Page numbering ????

I have a 100 page document with a cover page and a table of contents page. I
want the page numbering to start on the third page and that page needs to
start with #2. I put a section break after the table of contents page and
formatted the page numbering to start at #2. The next page should be #3,
however when I insert a page number, it adds a #1 to the cover page and a #2
to the table of contents page. I have tried repeatedly to correct this,
including deleting and starting the document from scratch. This is really
frustrating. I just installed Office 2007 and I'm not finding it user
friendly. It seems far more complicated than necessary. Help!!!

What is happening is that you have placed the section break after the TOC
but you have started the numbering with the TOC page which is still in
section 1. Because the page number is a section member, the whole of section
1 is therefore numbered.

So what you need to do is to add the Section Break Next Page BEFORE the TOC.
Then making sure that in Section 2 Headers and Footers that the Same as
Previous button is disabled and then insert the page number field making it
start with whatever page number you want.

If that isn't what you want, please let us know as there are many ways to
skin a cat with Word.

The easiest ways a

1. Using Insert | Page Numbers, clear the check box for "Show number on
first page."

2. If you're inserting a PAGE field directly in the header or footer (using
the Insert Page Number button on the Header and Footer toolbar), select
"Different first page" (File | Page Setup | Layout) and leave the First Page
Header/Footer blank (or at least without a page number).
