Default "set left indent"

In word 2003, for the past three days, when I get about 12 or 13 pages into
my outline the backspace set left indent stops working. I can tab forward
and I can shift+tab backwards, but I can't tab backspace up one level. I
went into options and I made sure that set left indent was selected, but for
some reason the function stops working after 12 or so pages. (I even
de-selected and re-selected the option, but backspace stops working after a
while)
PLEASE HELP! Driving me NUTS!
