I can't seem to get any help on removing this box from either excel, word, or
outlook. I have read other post that just recite the same stuff about
right clicking and unchecking the show the box. I don't have this box and
never have had it. I have many others. I have tried the suggestion that I had
googled for in which the MVP said to go to Customize then in the Toolbar tab
select Menu Bar and then click properties. The problem there is that I have
no properties to click. All I have is reset or keyboard on the bottom. To the
right I have New, Rename, Delete and Reset, but no properties at all. I am
using Office 2003

I was just joking about the MVP part it was in reference to the fact that
Jezebel was acting like a smart by the statements he chose. If either he/she
or you read the topic heading it stated ---type a question box----. To a
user of an Office 2003 product this would be very evident to what I was
talking about.

Instead of taking the time to wear the bifocals that are on his or her desk
and actually reading the topic header, this person instead chose to comment
on my intelligence and at the same time exploiting his or her ignorance. All
while providing no help.

You did provide help even though chosing not to read the topic header to
find out what I was refering to.

Since you say that the box can't be removed then why is stated that it can
be hidden in the help document?

tried what was told to me in the help and I don't even have a checkbox for
that option.

Linguistically a text is more than just
words scrambled together at random.

I was baffled by what you are heading for, too.

There is a dropdown-listbox, usually in the upper right hand corner,
the default text of which is "Type a question for help",
which vanishes with hiding the menu bar manually.

Then build your own "MyMenuBar".

How do I get it back? It seems that the setting is not in normal.dot or in
the Data or Toolbars registry entries.

How do you hide the bar manually? If you are going to suggest that I do it by
going right clicking the menu and unchecking the box for "show ask a
question" I have already tried that and have no such option. I cannot uncheck
that which I do not have.

Please, if you have another way of removing this box, then go ahead and tell
me. I just want to customize word or any other office product the way I want,
especially if the feature is in the help and the way to do it in help leads
to no solution.

Sorry if I appear to be hostile towards Jezebel, but if you read his first
reply, he offers nothing but insults to my post. My header tells the issue
and the body explains in more detail as to what I want to do and what I have
already tried. I know that the MVP service is trying to help but insulting a
poster, instead of just asking to clarify the problem further, which demeans
this service that you guys offer.

Thx, I already knew that, but I do understand your suggestion. The only thing
that I didn't understand was the help that comes with Office 2003's way of
suggesting how to turn it off. Was this removed through an update(service
pack, etc.)? Does anyone have the ability just to turn off the type a
question box as described in the help.

left click in the grey box preceding
the "type a question for help"-box

There seem to be quite a lot of possible variations.

By the way, I hate constructions like
"type a question for help"-box.
The more so as it is called
"Ask A question"-box in the help.

Once again, "help" all to often is no help at all.

Powerpoint to turn it off individually in each app. If you have right clicked on the 'Ask a Question' box and then left clicked the

'question' box will not be visible.

If you the reopen the Tools=Customize dialog the 'question box' will be visible when the dialog is opened and you can right click

The problem I'm facing is that I have no option when rightclicking the box
to show or hide the only options I get when right clicking anywhere is to
turn off all the other stuff like formatting, standard, autotext, etc.

I am starting from a fresh and updated from Microsoft install without any
other addins, addons, etc.

Btw, I don't have any of those entries in my registries.

Settings is the last folder and it only has one entry.

Thx again for replying Helmut but once again, I have no option to show or
hide that box. The only box I have checked right now is the Menu Bar box.
That is what I was told to uncheck earlier which that would be a bad idea
anyways. I can't even uncheck that box if I tried though. It's like it's not
even allowed.

With the box the

right click in the box,
uncheck, close.
Box has gone, here and now.

With no box the

f*ing box appears,
right click the box,
uncheck the preceding grey square
nothing happens
close
end dam*d
box is still there

repeat dam*d
box has gone and hopefully will have vanished forever.

Otherwise, I don't know.

can look like you're clicking one place, but be a bit 'off' when you click the 'Ask a question box' with the Tools=Customize dialog
open
there should be at least one Reg_Binary key in that toolbars entry for each Office app installed.

You may want to try exporting then deleting that registry key, then doing a repair/reinstall from Add/Remove Programs in the Windows
control panel and check the settings there to see that the help wizard items are installed.

Thx for reply as you were right about clicking the right place, probably
mouse problem as it was very picky on where to click. I still don't have
those registry entries but doesn't seem to be a problem yet. You were very

he suggested that the mouse driver might be off when selecting the type a
question box and sure enough he was right. I wasn't even clicking near the
box when the option finally appeared.

I still think you're clicking in the wrong place or under the wrong
conditions. It sounds like you're getting the toolbar menu you get when
right-clicking on the Menu Bar or a toolbar in Word when the Customize
dialog is not open (this menu does not appear when you right-click on a
toolbar or the Menu Bar with the dialog open). If you click in/on the "Ask a
Question" box *while the Customize dialog is open*, you will get the single
menu item "Show Ask a Question Box," with a check beside it.

Please confirm that this is what you are doing:

1. Opening the Tools | Customize dialog (in any of the myriad ways that can
be done--I usually just double-click on a toolbar).

2. With the Customize dialog displayed, right-clicking in the "Ask a
Question" box *on the Menu Bar.*

When you do this, you should get the single menu item described, which you
click to deselect it. When you close the Customize dialog, the Ask a
Question box should be gone.
