Default Page Layout - No Spacing

How do I set the page layout style so that the default is to "no spacing." I
have to change the style everytime I start a new document.

Mary Mack...I would like to know the same answer. It's driving me nuts
having to change it each time.

I will take a guess at this. Format the document as you wish and save it as
a template, then open the template each time, do your thing and save as a
different file.

The settings for a new page are based on the Normal style. To change one or
more of the settings: On the Home tab, in the Styles group, right-click on
Normal. Click Modify. Make desired changes. (Notice that you can change line
spacing and paragraph spacing.) Click New Documents Based on this Template.
Click OK.

It is preferable, however, to change the document defaults rather than
Normal style. Do this in the Manage Styles dialog.

And, coming full circle, changing the style set changes the document default
settings. If the normal style has not been modified to something different,
its settings will be the same as document defaults.

Pam and Suzanne:
I do not understand "document defaults."
Where do I find the "Manage Styles" dialog box?
Does what you are saying change the defaults on the new blank document that
opens when you open Word?

Use the dialog launcher at the bottom of the Styles group on the Home tab to
open the Styles window (or pane). In the bottom left corner, the third
button from the left says Manage Styles. This opens the Manage Styles
dialog, one of whose tabs is Set Defaults. There you can choose your default
font and paragraph formatting (for the given document or for all new
documents). Although, as Pam said, Normal style by default will reflect the
document defaults, changing the defaults doesn't cause problems in table
styles as modifying Normal does.

Thanks so much! I'm amazed that you ever found that Manage Styles button.
The information from the Help section told me how to change the Normal style,
but had no warning that that might cause other problems.

I agree that those buttons don't exactly draw attention to themselves. I did
have the advantage of having been involved in discussions of a prototype of
the Manage Styles dialog early in the development of Word 2007 (so I knew it
existed), but my knowledge of where to find it and how to use it has come
from these newsgroups.

In earlier versions, there was an issue with table styles not retaining the
defined fonts if the Normal font had been modified. That problem doesn't
arise if you change the document defaults instead of the Normal style (I
think I have that right; I don't use table styles, so I'm a little vague on
this).
