Default How do I delete unused Heading formats from drop down menue

When I format a title header for example from 12pt to 14pt, I end up having 2
selections in the drop down menue. How can I delete the unwanted version? I
would like to create a template and not have too many options for changes.

On the Edit tab of Tools | Options, clear the box for "Keep track of
formatting."
