Default Outlining in Word

Is there a good way to do outlining in Word. Whenever I try to use the
outlineing function, it shuts off randomly, the tab does not demote etc. I am
wondering if anyone has found a good way to do a traditional outline in Word.

See http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...Numbering.html

For the Tab key to work with outlines, make sure that you check the
appropriate option:

For Word 2000 and earlier: Tools Options, Edit tab: "Tabs and
backspace set left indent."

For Word 2002 and later: Tools AutoCorrect, AutoFormat As You Type
tab: "Set first and left indent with tabs and backspaces."
