Default Change default format options for tables?

How can I change the defaults on tables? For example, just inserting a table
has the option "allow row to break across page" checked and the top and
bottom margins aren't quite as large as I would like. I'm getting tired of
changing these things every single time. Where can I set a default?

Create an example table, format it as desired, and create an AutoText entry
from it. Whenever you need this particular table formatting, insert the
AutoText.

Alternatively, if you have a Word version that supports table styles, you
may want to try modifying a (custom) table style and then set it as the
default in Word. But note that table styles are buggy; see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/tablestyles/index.html.

The problem with creating an AutoText entry is that then, instead of changing
the margins and the row breaking, I would be changing the number of columns
and rows. That's just as many extra steps. Ditto re styles--I would still
have to change the style every time. But thank you for your suggestions.

Note that the cells of the "example table" can have paragraph styles
applied.

Also note that, after you've deleted columns or rows, you can use the
AutoFormat commands to resize the table (so that it fits its container).
