Default Relink graphic to embedded object

WD2003. A colleague lost her embedded objects, and I assume she'd hit
Ctrl+Shift+F9 by some sort of accident and converted them all to images. How
can I convert them back? While the obvious workaround is to redo the OLEing,
why can I not fix it by selecting one and go to Edit Links? It lets me
change the link of that item to a file somewhere, but all it achieves is a
bigger graphic. What am I missing?

I can only think of two ways of "linking" these pictures to the files, either
1) redo the Insert Object from File, Display as icon; or 2) hyperlink the
pictures you have to the files you want.
1) the files will be with the document, so can be sent to others.
2) Files not embedded in the document, so any distribution can be bothersome.

Best of luck

Hi Jonathan,

Can you provide additional information on the indication that the linked objects were 'lost'?

I'm not clear on what you're seeing before and after using Edit=Links when you say you choose a location through Edit links after
the link is broken and as a result get a bigger graphic.

Were these pictures (Insert=Picture) or Objects (Insert=Object)? Insert=Object for graphics carries a lot of overhead, but you
can often link to the original editing/creating program if Object is selected.

If you're using Alt+F9 to look for the field codes for linked or embeeded items that only shows links/fields for items that are
formatted as inline with text in a document. If they're formatted with any other text wrapping they're visible to Edit=Links, but
not through Alt+F9, and Ctrl+Shift+F9 won't break the links of non-inline items, although Edit=Links can be used for that..

Thank you for your quick response. The user was puzzled as to why linking she
does "all the time" had vanished, and all the links had become mere icon
images with file titles. Ctrl+Shift+F9 would have broken all links, I
thought, or perhaps she had made a different error. I asked her to re-embed
her files to get the work done but I remain puzzled.

1. The user said she had had difficulty "opening the objects" in a Word
file, by which I assumed without asking that she had put them in with Insert
Object, Create from file, linked.

2. A typical field code under these images when I hit Alt+F9 is
{INCLUDEPICTURE " \* MERGEFORMATINET }
3. When I inserted a file, it says { EMBED AcroExch.Document.7 }
4. When I look at the table in Edit Links, I see the source files are all
of the form , type Graphic, Update Man, and
the Source information says it is Link Type: Graphic.
5. If I change that link to a PDF or DOC, the source file changes to what
I've done, but the Source information stays saying Graphic. If I insert a new
file the source info changes to Adobe Acrobat, or Microsoft Word Document or
whatever
