Default Table of Figures - tabs?

My captions are all set up like:
Figure 3-1. The Caption Would Be Here

When I create my table of figures, is it possible to align the captions
themselves? I.e., put a tab between the figure number and the caption so the
captions all align down the page. Right now there's just the space between
number and caption, as I have put in my captions.

This is confusing to explain...hope it makes sense. Using Word 2003.

I assume you've tried inserting tabs manually. That will work until the
first time you update the entire table, when it will revert to a space again.

Have you tried putting a tab in the caption itself, instead of a space?
That's probably the only way you will be able to get it to stick.

Yeah, I've stayed away from the manual changes because I know this TOC will
get updated many times.

I really don't want a tab between the number and caption, so perhaps I'm
just stuck with the funny-looking TOC...you'd think this would be something
that could be set.
