Default Hyperlinks Changed to UNC Paths

Word 2003 SP2 on XP Pro SP2

Is there a way to stop Word changing hyperlinks to mapped drives into UNC's?
I don't want my users seeing the UNC.

I found a Technet article about disabling this feature in Office 97 SP1, but
the reg hack didn't work for 2003.

Thanks
