How do I link a numbered list to a numbered heading?
I write and maintain technical documents in a government facility. The
documents must adhere to formatting standards, one of which is outline-numbered headings and lists. However, when moving sections of a document, or inserting a new heading which causes the outline-numbered heading to change, I must manually change the outline-numbered lists to match the new heading numbers. Is there a way to link the list numbering to the heading number which precedes the list? |

How do I link a numbered list to a numbered heading?
I'm not sure exactly what you want here, but it sounds like you need to use
the lower hierarchical levels of the outline list you use for headings for your list numbering. Assuming you use built-in headings, do this from Modify on Heading 1 style, following the same basic order of work as explained by Shauna Kelly at http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...Numbering.html Set up the numbering you want for your lists (I'm assuming it picks up some heading number) and link the level to the style you use for lists. Note that you must do this working down from Heading 1 style - don't try to format Numbering directly on your list style. This method may not work if the lists can occur at any level, because Word will not count "correctly" if there are missing levels in the hierarchy. If that is a problem, you could pick up the last heading number via a StyleRef field, but that will involve more complex formatting for the list numbering. -- Margaret Aldis - Microsoft Word MVP Syntagma partnership site: http://www.syntagma.co.uk Word MVP FAQ site: http://www.word.mvps.org "Nelson Selinger" Nelson wrote in message ... How do I link a numbered list to a numbered heading?
I have. That article does not apply to this scenario. I realize I could
re-format the numbered lists as "headings" (apply an outline-numbered-heading style), but that approach introduces further headaches. My question is whether a numbered list can be linked to a heading-NUMBER (so that the list number CONTAINS the heading number) without being linked to the rest of the "heading outline hierarchy". Perhaps I have to insert a field code ahead of the list number? Perhaps it is just not possible? Thanks anyway, Nelson Selinger "Suzanne S. How do I link a numbered list to a numbered heading?
Styles don't have to be heading styles to be part of an outline-numbered
list. Set up a list that has your heading as Level 1 and the lower-level (numbered list) style as Level 2 (linking the level to the style in the More section of the dialog) and including the higher-level number in the paragraph number for the list. -- Suzanne S. How do I link a numbered list to a numbered heading?
Thanks, Margaret. I think that answers my question. My "numbered lists" do
occur under different/various "heading levels". I'll try and figure out the StyleRef field usage.
