I am attempting to provide a pronunciation key for the word "refuse" (as in
garbage or trash). I have found the symbol for the short "e" sound in "ref-",
but I cannot find a symbol for the long double "o" sound in "-use". I am
using Microsoft Word 2000 Professional.

This may not be exactly what your looking for, but have you tried
InsertSymbol for the character?

You may need to look for a special font. The only place I can find oo (with
macron and breve) is in the AHD Symbol font that came with American Heritage
Dictionary software. There was a similar font, I think, that came with
Encarta.
