Word Template vs. Document
Okay...hopefully someone can give me a quick easy solution to this issue. I
created a form that my engineers use. One of my engineers just opened it while in Word instead of opening it from Explorer...when he did this...it opened the template...not the document version...so when he saved his changes...it saved it to the template...not to a new document. How can I ensure that regardless of where they open the document from they are NOT opening the template version!? I thought locking it would ensure that...but it doesn't seem to be the case! Any thoughts!? |

Put it in the Templates folder. This doesn't *prevent* people opening it
directly, but does mean it's available uner File New (which is the 'normal' way to create documents anyway). In addition, the templates folder is normally located a little off the beaten track, so novices are less likely to stumble across it. "LeahT" wrote in message ... Yeah...that is where it is...but there is a short-cut to it in each job
folder so they don't have to hunt for it...so generally speaking they open the job folder...find the PM folder...find the New Job Master Form...and open...but for some reason when this engineer opens it from in Word instead of his explorer...it opens the template (.dot)...not the .doc!? Plus...I thought once I locked it for editing it was LOCKED...whcih means that no one but me should be able to save over it...right!? "Jezebel" wrote: Put it in the Templates folder. Word Template vs. Document
hmmm...that might work! LOL...I have sat down with him and instructed him to
open things through Explorer...but he is an engineer...so a bit resistant to change! I don't understand though...what the heck is the point of locking the dumb thing if it doesn't make any difference when he goes to save it!? "Jezebel" wrote: Hit him till he stops. Word Template vs. Document
Hi ?B?TGVhaFQ=?=,
I don't understand though...what the heck is the point of locking the dumb thing if it doesn't make any difference when he goes to save it!? Which version of Word is this and how did you "lock it" for editing (very specific steps, please)? In a general way there is nothing in Word that will prevent changes from being made to a template, but not "lock" any documents generated from it, as well. Something you could, perhaps, try is putting a macro named AutoOpen in the template. It would check whether the document itself is a template and if it is, simply close it again. This should prevent accidents such as you describe (and drive the engineer right up the wall, making him more open to changing his ways). In order to open it to make any changes, just hold down the SHIFT key to circumvent the macro. Sub AutoOpen() If ActiveDocument.Type = wdTypeTemplate _ Then ActiveDocument.Close End Sub Cindy Meister INTER-Solutions, Switzerland http://homepage.swissonline.ch/cindymeister (last update Jun 17 2005) http://www.word.mvps.org This reply is posted in the Newsgroup; please post any follow question or reply in the newsgroup and not by e-mail :-) |
