You can add it to your status bar.

Where is the word count tool?
Hi,
You'll find the Word Count function under the "Review" tab (under "Set Language"). I hope it helps, Cheers, Thierry Fontenelle [MSFT] "abbyvfb" wrote: Can someone please help! Where is the word count tool?
You could insert a DocProperty field
{ DOCPROPERTY Words } But the field itself will add 1 to the word count and the use of 'Words: ' would add another, so if you did not wish to include the field in and its associated text in the count, you could insert a combination of fields eg { ={ DOCPROPERTY Words } - 1 \# "'Words: '0" } You can save this as an autotext or formatted autocorrect entry (for say #wc) for ease of reinsertion, but always update the field after insertion. Or you could insert the word count with a macro. -- Graham Mayor - Word MVP My web site www.gmayor.com Word MVP web site http://word.mvps.org Hope wrote: I know where it is - but how do I insert the [WORD COUNT: 250] on my typed document? Type everything except the number itself. For that, type NUMWORDS, then
select that word and press Ctrl+F9 to convert it to a field and F9 to update. -- Suzanne S. Where is the word count tool?
This version is the worst!!! It took me way too long to find this simple
function: Click on "Review" tab. In left box (spelling and grammar) next to "Translate" is a little box - 123. That's the word count button. MS software is such a scam. Why do they make it so difficult? Because they can. cheers Joe in Durango, CO "abbyvfb" wrote: Can someone please help! Where is the word count function in Word 2007? Live word count is on the status bar. But only sometimes updates. Specifically, if you select part of a text the live word count /should/ show the number of words in the selected portion before the number of words in the whole text. Sometimes it does, and that's great. Sometimes it doesn't, which sucks. In my latest college assignment there are blocks of plain text for which, if I select them, the live word count will show the word count for the selection. There there are other blocks of plain text for which, if I select them, the live word count will continue to display only the total for the document and I have to go to the word count button on the review tab to get the count. So I'm afraid I'm at least partly with "Joe in Durango, CO". Word count in the status bar would be a great feature if it worked consistently. It doesn't, so it's a real nuisance that the version that /does/ work is so hard to find. |

Hi Digitig,
Could you provide some steps to reproduce the behavior? Is this typed text, or text pasted from a non-Word document pasted in? What font are you using and what view are you working in. Generally, the type of behavior you mentioned can occur if the font is a symbol font (even if the 'symbols' look 'letterlike') as Word then doesn't see 'words' just characters, but clicking on the Wordcount item on the Word 2007 status bar at the bottom of the screen should bring up the count dialog and a character count that does 'see' these characters but the Word count may not appear correctly. ============ "digitig" wrote in message ... Oh great, I guess we are supposed to be mind-readers and just know all this.
"Could you provide some steps to reproduce the behavior?" Isn't MS supposed to be telling US where these behaviors are? Didn't someone test this before releasing it? Why to users have to point out the problems? But I guess if there is no regard for the amount of lost productivity caused by someone in MS not having anything better to do than completely change the UI, there certainly is no interest in telling customers how the new UI actually works (when it does). === "Bob Buckland ?:-)" wrote: Hi Digitig, Could you provide some steps to reproduce the behavior? Hi Digitig, Could you provide some steps to reproduce the behavior? Unfortunately no, I've not found a pattern to it yet. Mind you, I've only just noticed it (it's the first time I've needed word count since moving to Office 2007) so I'll keep a look out to see if I can make it reproducible. Is this typed text, or text pasted from a non-Word document pasted in? This is text I have typed in. It's a college assignment in which I need to do 1000 words for the first part and 300 for each of the second and third parts. The partial counts were showing fine for the parts 1 and 2, not at all for part 3. I kept typing and selecting, and after a bit more typing and selecting the word count started appearing as it should (now I just need to get my word count down by about 20%!). What font are you using and what view are you working in. Calibri, print layout. |

I have one machine that refuses to show Word Count in the status bar. I go to
Review and click the 123 button, and it will show Page 2 of 2, but not the word count. Then, next time I start Word I have to do that again. How do I get it to show the Word Count on the status bar, and how do I get it to stay there so next time I start Word it comes up again? Thanks! "digitig" wrote: "Suzanne S. Word2007? Right-click on the status bar and turn on Word Count. (And
whichever of the other availabilities would be convenient for you.) On Nov 2, 9:15*am, Margaret wrote: I have one machine that refuses to show Word Count in the status bar. I agree with these comments. Why isn't there a simple way to translate word
2003 functions to word 2007?? Some one really missed a very basic step in the design process. Rich "Joe" wrote: This version is the worst!!! Where is the word count tool?
You have probably already found your answer to this, but just in case.........
click on the Review tab look on the left section entitled Proofing down the right side of the box you will see an icon ABC123 this is the word count icon. highlight the area in your document that you need a word count and then click on the icon . A little dialog box should pop onto your screen with the count for you. to save yourself from searching out this tool each time, simply right click on the icon and select "Add to Quick Access Toolbar" . You will then see the icon appear in your toolbar immediately above your document -- computerly challenged "abbyvfb" wrote: Can someone please help! Where is the word count function in Word 2007? It is not necessary to add the Word Count icon to the QAT since it is
already present (or potentially present) on the status bar. If you don't see it there, right-click on the status bar and add it. The status bar will then display the word count, and clicking on that will open the Word Count dialog. -- Suzanne S. I think the solution to everyone's issue with finding commands is this:
1. Right-click on the "HOME" tab. 2. Select "CUSTOMIZE QUICK ACCESS TOOLBAR" 3. In the new window under "Choose Commands From:" drop down menu select "ALL COMMANDS" 4.You will see a list of all commands. Scroll down to the command you want to add and highlight it or double click. 5. Click "ADD" button. 6. Your command button will now reside on the top toolbar. Note: there are some commands that are not directly accessible from the standard toolbar menus. "abbyvfb" wrote: Can someone please help! Where is the word count function in Word 2007? It is in the status bar or under the review tab.
However i need help reenabling my status bar. I had it at the bottom of the page and it disappeared. If someone knows how to get it back that would be helpful. Where is the word count tool?
I too have had considerable difficulty using Word Count to find the count for a selection. Two observations: * It has trouble with any text that was input by a second user and which I then accepted via track changes. * It has trouble with citations linked to the reference list. This may relate to the first point. My work-around: after you select the relevant text, copy and paste it into a new document. The resulting word count should be accurate. It worked for me. There's a Word Count button on the Review tab, but it's much more
satisfactory to right-click on the status bar and add Word Count as one of the buttons there. It will automatically display the word count of the entire document or a selection, and you can click on it to get the character count and other statistics. -- Suzanne S.
