Default mail merge using excel spread looses the format for social securit

i can format the ssn in an excel spreadsheet... that appears to work, but
when i then use that excel spreadsheet in a mailmerge the ssn mask is gone?
the problem is that on one mailmerge it will be there and on the next run it
wont be there anylonger. looking back at the excel spreadsheet shows the ssn
including mask.
