How do I insert chapter number with page number in footer?
This used to work in Word 2000, but in 2003, the footer page number will not
bring in the chapter number with the page number (e.g., 1-1, A-1). Here is what I have done: 1. I've made the Heading for the chapter a Heading 1 style that is based on an outline numbering format. In the Heading, the chapter + number appear as automatically generated text (i.e.,"Chapter 1" is a field code). 2. When I go to insert the page number in the footer, I select the Insert, Page Numbers command and click the Format button. 3. I select the Include chapter number check box, set the Chapter starts with style as "Heading 1", and set the User separator "- (hyphen)," and set the Start at option at "1" in the Page numbering group box. 4. When I click OK, I receive an error message: "There is no chapter number to include in the caption or page number. To apply chapter numbers use the Bullets and Numbering command on the Format menu and select a multilevel list style that is linked to the Heading styles." I've already set the Section to Heading 1 as explained in step 1 above. I'm not sure what step I'm missing in this process, but it wasn't this difficult previously to get that Chapter number into the footer with a hyphen before the sequential page number. Help! Thanks. |

It sounds as if Joan has already correctly done everything suggested in that

Suzanne,
You are correct. I checked the link to make absolutely sure I hadn't missed anything (actually, I've seen this article a number of times), but I've followed the instructions precisely. Yet the software does not respond as indicated in the instructions. I don't know if this is a bug or if there is some other (undocumented?) setting buried in the Word 2003 that needs adjusting. If you have any thoughts, I am definitely interested. Many thanks for your help. Joan "Suzanne S. Offhand, I can't think of anything, though I don't have any personal
experience with this feature, so I might be missing something. If you'd like to send me a *small* sample of the problem document, I'll take a look and see what I can figure out. One more thought, though: have you set up outline numbering as described at http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...umbering.html? Even if you're numbering only one heading level, it's worthwhile to go through this process in order to link the numbering to the style. -- Suzanne S.
