Default "requesting virus scan" problem - yet again

I too have recently started having this problem ( I am using Office 2000
Premium): whenever I try to open Word or a Word document the taskbar shows
"requesting virus scan" and the program stops responding. If I leave it alone
and do something else, Word will open after about 12 minutes, but is then
liable to hang at the slightest provocation. (Incidentally Excel also
"requests a virus scan" but this takes less than a second.)
I note there are many posts on this subject scattered across the groups, but
99% of these relate to an incompatibility with Norton Antivirus: I have never
had NAV on my PC and use the free version of AVG. I have tried unticking the
"scan documents" box in AVG but this seems to make no difference except bring
up a dire warning that my PC is unprotected. I have also tried a repair
installation of Office and deleted the "normal.dot" file but neither had any
effect. Any suggestions would be welcome.
