why would a doc decide on it's own to show formatting every time it opens?
(view/markups). and how do i get it to stop defaulting to that? THANKS in
advance.

This is an application-wide setting (not something that can be set for each
document) and will be inherited from the last window opened. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/SaveViewAndZoom.htm for some tips.

that was a very helpful doc...however the existing doc that has decided to
show formatting still insists on doing so. i changed it to not show markup,
made another change, saved it (also tried save as), closed and opened. still
shows markup.

Note that clicking the Show/Hide ¶ button toggles between showing *all*
nonprinting characters and showing those that are specifically selected on
the View tab of Tools | Options. That may be contributory to your problem.
Alternatively, if this is a document you didn't create, there's a remote
possibility that it contains an AutoOpen macro that turns on display of
nonprinting characters (that's very unlikely). Yet a third (and quite likely
possibility) is that the document contains fields (such as XE or TC fields)
that are formatted as Hidden text. Word does display these by default upon
opening.

Ordinarily Word opens with the same settings in effect when you closed it,
but if you have several documents open and close one, the next one you open
will open with the same settings as the one you just closed, as if the
document you closed had established the settings for the "window" in which
you open the new one. This is explained (wrt "white space") in WD2002:
Rules for Hide white space between pages at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=297564, an article I suspect explains the
behavior of another of other View options.

I believe you are referring to seeing tracked changes when you open a
document? Turning off the view of tracked changes doesn't remove them from
the document, they are still present. The only way to completely remove them
is to accept/reject the changes.

For more information take a look at this article:
