I have been trying to tag text in order to find and move it to a database. I
have no formatting information in the tags but it reformats them anyway.
Worse, it seems to create new styles with format information added (i.e.
Title + whatever). ANy suggestions?

If you want a newly created character style not to change anything,
make sure that you base it on "underlying properties" as you create
it. For existing character styles, you should be able to change the
setting via the Modify Style dialog box.
