Default Overwriting selection

When I select text and then type new text, Word does not overwrite the
selected text but only inserts the new text before the selected text. This
happened without warning. How do I fix this. XP Word 2003.

This has literally saved my computers life €“ I was on the brink of throwing
it out of the window €“ my boss will be pleased I didnt have to!

There must be a shortcut I inadvertently pressed?

Thanks again!

The Insert key toggles between overwriting and inserting text.

At least in Word 2007, you can disable the Insert key; make sure to clear
the option to "Use the Insert key to control overtype mode" (Office button |
Word Options, Advanced category--you'll find the option under "Editing
options").

I echo the thanks of all the posters above! I too think I hit a bizarre
shortcut to turn this off!

It's very easy to accidentally touch Insert, which is adjacent to
Backspace and Delete on the standard 104-key keyboard.
