Default Closed a new document without saving

Help! I accidentally closed a new document without first saving. However,
it seems I didn't get the "Do you want to save changes to XXX?" alerting me
that I was closing the document.

Is there any way to recover the document or am I doomed to rewriting it?

If the document was never saved, there is nothing to recover, so I'm afraid
you will have to start retyping it.
