Default lining up indented lists

I have a situation where I am trying to place a list in my report. It is a compatibility problem between Word 7 and then saving in Word 97-2003. In Word 7 the lists line up appropriately but as soon as I save it to Word 97-2003 , the a) is there and then the test to go next to that line drops down one line and loses the first letter of each line.

a)
an anyone help to line up this with the letters? Is there a setting that I am missing?

Sorry, it is not showing up in the display, but the text is beginning on the line below the a)
