Default Inline Numbering

Is there a way to control the inline numbering? To make this clear- I often
have to make a multiple choice assignment for my students which would be
similar to this: "Some text ...(1)... . Some more ...(2)... text . Some more
....(3)... text."
1) insert one
2) insert two
Inserting numbers into a story can get annoying when you miss a number, then
you'll have to start the numbering all over again

You can set this up using an outline-numbered list. First create two
styles (or use existing styles), one for the questions and one for the
various choices of answers. Then link the styles to outline numbering
(see http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...Numbering.html).
Note that if you don't want the top-level to be numbered, pick
"(none)" (in the Number style box of the Customize Outline Numbered
List dialog box).

What I meant was the numbering in the story, not the list, e.g.
"startling new evidence €¦(70)€¦ (just to come) from Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Since atom bombs €¦(71)€¦ (to drop) in 1945, their citizens, and their genes,
€¦(72)€¦ (to study) in extensive detail. Scientists €¦(73)€¦ (to search) for
signs that mutations, triggered by the A-bomb blasts, €¦(74)€¦ (to pass) on to
survivors"
Can I have any control over these numbers?

You can use SEQ fields for this purpose. To insert a SEQ field, press
Ctrl+F9 and type SEQ mynum within the field delimiters: { SEQ mynum }.
Press F9 to update. To insert more fields, you can copy and paste an
existing one.

Fields do not update automatically (which will be especially apparent
if you used copy and paste to create additional fields). To force an
update, select the entire document and press F9. Alternatively, switch
to Print Preview and back.

To set the start value for a field, add the /r switch. For example:
{ SEQ mynum /r 23 }.

To toggle display of field codes, press Alt+F9.

Note that you can read more about SEQ fields in Word Help.

It's the \r switch (not the /r switch). Sorry.

In other words: { SEQ mynum \r numberhere }

To be contrarian, if the numbers in the text must correspond to numbers in a
numbered list, I would use cross-references instead. Like SEQ fields, they
won't update automatically, but Ctrl+A, F9, will bring everything back in
line.
