Default Non-used styles displaying in Word2003

I currently use Word 2003. I believe my problem is due to the following, but
I'm not sure. To create a 'hybrid version' I needed to merge Chapters from a
Word 2003 doc into an older, existing Word2002 doc. When copying and pasting
the sections in I encountered numerous issues: Word crashed 'encountered a
problem...sorry for the inconvenience', section breaks and chapter headings
required re-styling. After more effort than anticipated, I was able to
complete the doc. However, now when I open any of a dozen or so user guides
in Word 2003, and open the styles and formatting toolbar, I can't flip
between styles in use and available styles. Styles that are not used in the
docs display in the list. Also when I click a style that does exist to
'select all', 'not currently used' displays rather than the number of
instances and highlights throughout.

Any ideas how I became jumbled?

"Styles in use" means styles that have once been used; they don't have
to be applied to text right now. You may find the macro at
http://gregmaxey.mvps.org/Style_Report.htm useful.

To be able to use Select All, you have to enable the "Keep track of
formatting" in Tools | Options, Edit tab.
