Default What's the Word equivalent to WordPerfect styles (and don't tell me styles!)?

I am trying to find the Word 2000 equivalent for WordPerfect styles, i.e.,
an area where I can save a large or small block of text and formatting.

I need to have these because I have large blocks of text that repeat in
documents and I don't want to change this identical text and formatting
every place it appears in the document. I should be able to change the text
or formatting once and be done with it.

How is this done?

This is what WP calls "styles"? Egad! No wonder I could never get the hang
of styles in WP.

In Word, this would be AutoText (you can use an AutoText field or insert the
content as plain text). See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/AutoText.htm

Or you can put the material in another document and use an IncludeText field
to insert it.

This is not what I'm talking about.

I am talking about a block of text and formatting that will only apply to
the current document and that I can change frequently.

Hi H.,

If you want to store text and reuse it, including
the formatting then AutoText as Suzanne mentioned
will do it. You can also store blocks in separate
files and use Insert=File or use Insert=Fields to
link the item in one place.

In either case you can use a {REF} field to have
it appear in multiple places, so that you only change
the first one and it updates the other.

But the other approach would be the use of styles if
you're only talking about changing the look of the
item. Define a style, apply it to each instance
and if you then change the style everything that is
formatted in that style changes.

You can also use Edit=Replace=All to change text
and formatting throughout a document.
