Default In some (not all) of my Word documents, the spell checker is chec.

In some (not all) of my Word documents, the spell checker is checking in
French. I have tried various solution recommended in "Help" in the program,
but I cannot get the spell checker to do its checking in English in certain
documents.

Ctrl+A to select the entire document, then go to Tools | Language | Set
Language and make sure the correct language is selected. You may find it
helpful to disable "Detect language automatically."
