Default hyperlinks to mapped drives invalid after emailing word document

In Word 2003 documents hyperlinks become invalid after emailing the document.
Documents emailed as attachment with Outlook 2003. The hyperlinks that
"break" are the ones that have longer paths. Hyperlinks that point to
targets four or five folders deep change to point to to c:\etc... after
emailing the document. Short mapped drive paths and web link hyperlinks are
ok after emailing documents.

Now I find hyperlinks in Word documents to mapped drives remain valid after
emailing the document if the following is done: Create and save the word doc
with hyperlinks on the local C: drive. Also attach the document to email
from the local C: drive. Unfortunately my users are trained to create and
save documents on server folders where they are backed up.
