Can't uncheck automatic style updating
Okay, I've spent the past few hours reading through various questions and
responses, but haven't found the answer to my problem. I'm trying to create a basic automatic TOC -- only one level. I'm using Word 2003. I want the font to be TNR 12 point, but the default is Courier 10 point. Every time I open the document, the TOC shows up as Courier 10. I go in to modify the TOC Level styles to TNR 12 (each level separately), and I uncheck the "Automatic Update" option. The TOC updates fine and looks as I want it. When I close the document and reopen it, the TOC is back to Courier and when I go into the TOC style the "Automatic Update" option is checked again. My Normal template has the "Automatic Update" box unchecked, and the Autocorrect When You Type box for Defining Styles is also unchecked. But whenever I restart Word, the TOC style goes back to its original form and doesn't save the changes I made. Any ideas? Thanks. |

A partial answer (as to your normal.dot not keeping its changes) is found in
the FAQ: 28. I can't save my customizations - AutoText, menus, etc. Can't save normal.dot... If you have Adobe Acrobat 7 installed see the last section of http://www.gmayor.com/lose_that_adob...at_toolbar.htm. Otherwise, hold down the Shift key when selecting the File menu and select Save All. Also, look in your document under Tools Templates and Add-Ins. The box there to update styles should be unchecked. -- Charles Kenyon Word New User FAQ & Web Directory: http://addbalance.com/word Intermediate User's Guide to Microsoft Word (supplemented version of Microsoft's Legal Users' Guide) http://addbalance.com/usersguide See also the MVP FAQ: http://www.mvps.org/word which is awesome! --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- This message is posted to a newsgroup. Thanks for the reply. I'd found a similar answer to uncheck the PDF Add-Ins
in one of the threads and tried that, but it hadn't worked either. For each of the three documents I was working in (none of which I created), I deleted the TOC and selected all text, then copied it into a new blank document. But I chose Paste Special and pasted it as Rich Text Format rather than HTML that it defaulted to, then went in and modified the TOC style as normal, and the changes stuck and the TOC looked like I wanted. Not sure why, but at least I'm happy with the result. "Charles Kenyon" wrote: A partial answer (as to your normal.dot not keeping its changes) is found in the FAQ: 28.
