Default Why can't I open files created in Word '97?

Unable to access the other (8) messages from the faq source, I ask again:
Why can't I read previous files from Word '97? There are approximately 1000
of them on the backup disk that I'm using to transfer from my previous
computer to my new one?

What happens when you try and "read" them?
What is the "backup" disk - how are you transferring them?
