One border around several levels of an outline
I have an outline numbered list, based on styles. I would like to put a
border around certain sections to make them look grouped together and stand out a bit. When I select the text I want to have a border around, and click "Outside Borders", I get an outside border for each level of the outline. For example Heading One 1. Heading Two 2. Heading Two A. Heading Three i. Heading Four ii. Heading Five B. Heading Three 3. Heading Two I want one border to go around A. i. ii. and B. like a box. What I end up with is a box around A., another box around i., another box around ii., and another box around B. Is there a way to do this? (I am using Word 2007) |

One border around several levels of an outline
I only have Word 2003, but I can make that happen either way (each level or a
selection). I don't know about selecting/using "Outside Borders;" I would have to use Borders and Shading. Select text you want to affect and: Format Borders and Shading [Tab] Borders €¢ on the right side of the tab is a dropdown for "Apply to:" €¢ if the selection is "Text" each line of text will have a border around it (and the box will end at the end of the text) €¢ if the selection is "Paragraph" the text will have a border around the "group" (and the box will end at the right margin Notes: €¢ If there are borders around the text or paragraph you may need to remove them (Format Borders and Shading Apply to: Text [or Paragraph] [click on] None)--you may need to remove them from both Text and Paragraph €¢ If your headings are short and you don't want the border to extend over to the right margin (on just that text) you can drag the right indent over to where you like or use Format Paragraph to specify Indentation on the Right I hope that this isn't terribly boring and then doesn't help. :-/ "kdags" wrote: I have an outline numbered list, based on styles. One border around several levels of an outline
Thanks for your response.
I'm still getting a border around each line, no matter if I select "Text" or "Paragraph" from the drop-down. It seems that Word is treating every level on the numbered list as its own paragraph, and is drawing a border around each level. I want one border around the whole thing. I'd rather not mess with the styles because they are infuriatingly confusing and it took me forever to set up the numbered list the way I want it. I've tried drawing a box (Insert shape) but that doesn't move with the text when I add text before or in between. A text box just throws everything out of whack. Is there anyway to make Word draw one outline around whatever I select? "fallen4chris" wrote: I only have Word 2003, but I can make that happen either way (each level or a selection). One border around several levels of an outline
Paragraphs with different indents can't have a single border. You could try
putting all the headings in a frame or table cell and applying a border to that. -- Suzanne S. Barnhill Microsoft MVP (Word) Words into Type Fairhope, Alabama USA "kdags" wrote in message ...
