Default ...Table of Contents / Hyperlinks ... Big File Size ...

I have created a table of contents for a fairly large document (Approximately
2,500 pages). I chose save each section as a separate File, and groups of
sections in chapter folders. I then created a file for the table of contents.

I have entered a hyperlink to each of the chapter folders as well as to each
of the section files, (I'm about halfway complete). I noticed that the
progress was getting a little sluggish, and low and behold the file size is
humungus, (about 172MB)!!!

Is there a different way to build a Table of Content which doesn't build
such a big file. Or, once I have completed the table of contents, can I
compile or compress the file?

I have a great concern because some of the guys that will be accessing this
file have fairly old computers with fairly slow processors.
