Default Split screen

Ever since someone sent me a Word document in an e-mail and I opened it, my
Word program automatically displays a split screen, whereupon I must go to
the Window tab and hit "split" and that removes the split, but not
permanently.
I tried many things, including the View tab, the side arrows, etc., etc.,
but nothing removes the split permanently. Can anyone help me?

Default Split screen

Sounds like the split got into your normal.dot file. You may need to rename
it.
