Default Small vertical lines in Office Word 2003

I'm typing a letter, and I have 3 small vertical lines which have appeared
which I can't seem to remove. Two are on the far left, one on the far right,
and they're immediately next to the text or between paragraphs. Can anybody
suggest what this might be? I'm very novice and lost.

I would guess they are change bars (with placement set to "Outside border").
See Tools | Options | Track Changes: Changed lines.
