Default Templates in Word won't default to a .docx

I have created a few templates in Word 2007. In Word 2003 when you opened a
template it defaulted to a .doc extension so it wouldn't overwrite the
template. Word 2007 is letting you overwrite the template. You either have
to do a 'save as' before you use the template, or recreate the template. Any
suggestions? Is there something setting I need to change so it will default
to a document and not a template?

In Word 2003 you don't open a template to do this, you create a new document
based on the template. Don't have enough experience with Word 2007 to tell
you what to do there. For more on the different kinds of templates, tabs on
the file new dialog, and locations of templates folders see
