When starting Word 2003, how can I stop the default screen from
displaying the Getting Started panel on the right side. I'd like to
just open the application to a new document -- without having all the
"helpful" hints to close.

In Tools Options View, try clearing the "Startup Task Panes" option.

If that doesn't work, download the Task Pane Controller from
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customizat...owTaskPane.htm.
