Default Updating document fields increases the size of the Word document

Why is it that when I update the fields in the Table of Contents or List of
Figures or List of Tables, my Word document increases in size exponentially?

Beats me. I suspect that updating the fields causes Word to create or
recreate all the hidden bookmarks used for the various TOC fields, but I
don't think that would result in an exponential increase in size.

You're not using a version of Word that allows saving versions, are you?
That might make the file size increase substantially with each save, but
still not related to updating the fields.

Thanks Bear,

Actually, I was using the feature for a while in this document that allowed
version save, and then unchecked it. I was also continuing to create the
document as a template, which really messed me up. Now it is as a Word Doc
and my styles are somewhat back to normal, but I just can't seem to use the
Update All feature in this version of Word 2003 - it destroys all my
cross-references (ref not found...).

I read there was a bug in the Office 2003 Professional regarding updating
fields, but am not sure if that is the problem with this.
