how can i change the tab distance?
Hi,
Probably the simplest way to do this is to set the TOC styles to 'Automatically Update', make the ruler visible, then select the TOC level that you want to change and drag the tabs to where you want them. And note that the TOC styles are set to "Automatically update" by default.

This is the only case where "Automatically update" is really useful, in my
opinion. -- Stefan Blom Microsoft Word MVP "Suzanne S. Barnhill" wrote in message ... And note that the TOC styles are set to "Automatically update" by default. -- Suzanne S. I agree, especially since it is so difficult in recent versions to access
the TOC styles for modification (a problem that is exacerbated if you opt into the hyperlinked entries, because then the only style displayed is Hyperlink). One problem I've experienced, though, is that changes in paragraph format are *usually* propagated (in some puzzling instances, they don't seem to "take"), but font formatting changes often are not. -- Suzanne S. I agree, especially since it is so difficult in recent versions to access
the TOC styles for modification (a problem that is exacerbated if you opt into the hyperlinked entries, because then the only style displayed is Hyperlink). In the old Style dialog box you can still see all the styles applied to text, though (each character, paragraph, table, and list style at the insertion point has a little arrow next to it). I have assigned Alt+S to the FormatStyle command, for easy access. One problem I've experienced, though, is that changes in paragraph format are *usually* propagated (in some puzzling instances, they don't seem to "take"), but font formatting changes often are not. I suspect that the problem with font formatting, at least in part, is caused by the fact that it is so difficult to select a single paragraph in the TOC field (usually, I end up selecting the entire field instead). -- Stefan Blom Microsoft Word MVP "Suzanne S. One of the first things I did in Word 2002 was add a toolbar button to
access the Style dialog directly. And of course for just applying styles (as opposed to modifying them), you can use Shift+click on the Styles dropdown. Clicking in the left margin next to a TOC entry selects the line, and, provided the entry is not longer than one line, that will do. And it should be possible to select a paragraph with a double-click in the left margin. -- Suzanne S.
