Default Why can't I open my MS word file folders any longer?

For some reason I can no longer open my Microsoft word file folders from
inside Microsoft. However I can open them from Windows Explorer. When I
double click on the file folder the working icon is displayed but that is
all. I then must go to task manager (I see the "Microsoft not responding"
)and I must use the end program option to leave Microsoft Word. I am using
2003 version and have not added any programs. Working on a Dell with XP Pro
SP2.

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165 "Problems in Windows
Explorer or the Windows shell after you install security update

Many Office users are having the same problem and it occurs in all Office
programs. It is the result of an automatic download of a Windows Update
security patch. While the article cited requires editing the system
registry, the easiest thing to do is just remove the security patch until MS
fixes the problem -- and they are working on it. Just go to Control Panel,
click on Add/Remove Programs, make sure the "show updates" box is checked,
scroll until you find a Security Update KB908531, and click Remove. This
security update is considered critical, but so is being able to use your
Office programs. They should have it fixed pronto.
