Default Word should let me insert references to only numbers for captions

Each time a new version of Word is released I eagerly check to see if it is
possible to insert cross-references to only the number of a caption. Each
time I get disappointed.

Let's say that I have the caption "Figure 1. Some caption". In Word it's not
possible to create a cross-reference to the number 1, but only to the label
and number as in "Figure 1". Why is it not possible to create a
cross-reference to the number only?

One way to do it is to manually insert a bookmark around the figure
number and then create a cross-reference to the text of the bookmark.
