Default How do I view "formatting in use" in Word 2007?

The feature in Word 2003, in the right-hand taskbar, where you could view
"Formatting in Use" was really useful. In particular, it allowed you to see
formatting that was not style-based. So, if you carelessly set some text to
"italic", rather than follow the better practice of applying the "emphasis"
style, you would see that some text was formatted with "italic". You could
then "select all 5 instances" and apply the "emphasis" style en-bloc.

Where's it gone in 2007?

JR,

On the Home tab, go to the Styles group and click on the dialog box launcher
icon at the bottom.

As you may know, many of the groups on each tab of the Ribbon have a little
box-and-arrow icon at the lower right (on the same line as the name of the
group). Those launch dialog boxes or task panes to give you access to
rarely-used or more advanced features.

Hope this helps,
Ben

Thanks Ben

I can only get that to show me styles that are available. Not just the
styles that are in use. Not the formatting that is in use.

For example, suppose I have that pane up, select some text, and then make
that text bold. I don't get a new entry in the styles dialog which says
"bold". In Wd 2003, I did get that when I viewed "formatting in use" (as
distinct to "styles").

Am I doing something wrong? Or looking at the wrong dialog?

James

Oh, yes--I see what you mean now! Click "Options" in the bottom of the Styles
task pane and you can choose to see only styles that are in use.

I haven't experimented with this much, so I don't know if the behavior will
be exactly the same as Office 2003--let me know how it goes.

That's it

The option I actually needed was to tick the box to show font level
formatting as a style. Without that, applying the bold property wasn't
considered officially to be "a style", so didn't show. With it - it's there.

That leads to a fairly cluttered styles pane, so it does then help to
display just the styles "in use", not all the ones that are "recommended".

Thanks

Ah, thanks. I'm still exploring the new UI, so it's good to share tips like
this...
