Default Customising automatic numbering

Does anyone know how to add an initial letter character to automatic
numbering of headings and sub-headings? The subsequent paragraphs do not need
to be numbered. Example

S1
S1.1
S1.2
S1.3 etc

Word 97-2003: For each level, just type the letter in the "Number format"
box of the Customize Outline Numbered List dialog box; see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...Numbering.html for
instructions on how to open the dialog.

Word 2007: Place the insertion point in a Heading 1 paragraph, and then
click Home tab | Multilevel List | Define New Multilevel List. For the
relevant numbering levels, enter the letter in the "Enter formatting for
number" box.
