Default turning off page numbers in Word 97

I've got headers and footers - page numbers - in a Word 97 document and
for the life of me I can't remove them. Does anyone know how?

Thanks

On the View menu, click Header and Footer. This activates the
header/footer area. Now you could just select and delete the contents
of headers and footers.

And if Insert | Page Numbers was used to insert the page numbers, they'll be
in a frame. It's important to delete the frame as well as the number; see
